Hell in a Cell is a gimmick event produced annually by WWE since 2009. The concept of the show comes from the promotion's established Hell in a Cell match, in which competitors fight inside a 20-foot-high roofed cell structure surrounding the ring and ringside area. The main event match of the card is contested under the Hell in a Cell stipulation.[2][3][4] Announced on March 4, 2022, the 2022 event was the 14th event under the Hell in a Cell chronology and featured wrestlers from the Raw and SmackDown brand divisions. With the exception of the September 2018 event, Hell in a Cell had been held in October. The 2021 event, however, moved the event series up to June, with the 2022 event scheduled for June 5 at the Allstate Arena in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Illinois. It aired on pay-per-view (PPV) worldwide and was available to livestream on Peacock in the United States and the WWE Network in international markets.[5]
The event was met with positive reviews from critics while the main event received universal acclaim. Rhodes and Rollins were praised for their performances, particularly Rhodes for competing inside despite a legitimately torn pectoral muscle. The main event would then be crowned WWE's and Pro Wrestling Illustrated's Match of the Year for 2022.
The 2022 Hell in a Cell would be the final Hell in a Cell event and was discontinued in 2023, though it was replaced by the King of the Ring, by that point renamed to King and Queen of the Ring. The match itself will continue to appear sporadically, beginning with WrestleMania 39.[31][32][33]
May 30, 2022: Austin Theory vs Mustafa Ali United States title match was announced for the show. This came after Theory took advantage of a tired Ali to give him a title match on RAW and defeated him easily.
May 23, 2022: Bobby Lashley challenged Omos for a match for this event. Lashley faced MVP in a singles match on the same night and the winner will choose the stipulation for the match at Hell in a Cell. MVP defeated Lashley via count-out after some distraction from Omos. MVP later announced that it will be a handicapped match.
May 23, 2022: After weeks of rivalry, Kevin Owens challenged Ezekiel for a match at this event. Owens has claimed that Ezekiel is none other than Elias and is just pretending to be his own brother.
May 16, 2022: Cody Rhodes challenged Seth Rollins for a rematch inside Hell in a Cell cage. Rollins accepted the challenge. This is the third singles match between Rhodes and Rollins in 2022.
Rating: 4.75 stars. Cody Rhodes injury is pretty gross, there's no getting around that. But this will probably go down as 2022's most memorable performance, for good or ill. You can definitely argue that it was irresponsible for WWE to let Cody go out there. But what's inarguable is that his performance was Herculean. Not only did he do the match, he did a 25-minute main event -- and a classic one at that.
The premium live event based around what might be one of WWE's most brutal matches, at least historically, returns to the calendar yet again this year. Hell in a Cell will be WWE's last major stop before it embarks on three huge stadium shows in the space of just two months. Hell in a Cell will take place on Sunday, June 5, 2022, starting at 8 pm EST, or 7 pm if you want to watch the kickoff show. That and the main card can be watched on Peacock in the US, or the WWE Network everywhere else. Everything announced for the show so far can be found below.
It was noted during the WWE Hell In A Cell 2022 Kickoff Show tonight that Cody suffered a partially torn right pectoral tendon during a brawl with Rollins earlier this week during their segment on the HIAC go-home edition of WWE Monday Night Raw on the USA Network.
